Gelegen op slechts 10 km van het centrum van Chengdu ligt het Giant Panda Research Centre. De reuzenpanda’s zijn niet alleen een Chinese nationale schat, maar zijn ook geliefd bij mensen over de hele wereld. Ze zijn alleen te vinden in de provincies Sichuan, Shaanxi en Gansu. In totaal zijn er minder dan 2.000, waarvan 70% wordt verdeeld binnen het grondgebied van de provincie Sichuan.
Reuzenpanda’s, kleine panda’s, zwarthalskranen, witte ooievaars en meer dan 20 soorten zeldzame dieren worden hier gevoerd en gefokt. Groene bamboe, heldere bloemen, frisse lucht, natuurlijke heuvels en een prachtig zicht zijn ingenieus samengevoegd.
Het complex omvat een voederruimte, slaapvertrekken en een medisch station. Daarnaast is er een museum samen met onderzoekslaboratoria en een opleidingscentrum.
Een groot aantal planten en maar liefst tienduizend bosjes bamboe en struiken zijn gekweekt om te voorzien in het dieet en leefgebied van de dieren. De basis is gebouwd om te worden uitgebreid met nog eens 500 hectare grond waar een natuurlijke omgeving kan worden gesimuleerd om de reuzepanda’s voor te bereiden die in het wild worden uitgezet.
Het Giant Panda Museum werd in 1993 geopend voor verder wetenschappelijk onderwijs en om het publieke bewustzijn van de bescherming van zowel wilde wezens als hun omgeving te verbeteren. Dit is ’s werelds enige thematische museum voor zeldzame en bedreigde diersoorten. De drie belangrijkste tentoonstellingen zijn in de Giant Panda Hall, de Butterfly Hall en de Vertebrate Hall. De exposities bevatten allerlei kostbare foto’s, meer dan 800 materialen en tonen meer dan 2.140 verschillende monsters verzameld in Sichuan. Deze omvatten voorbeelden van dieren, vogels, amfibieën, reptielen en insecten, evenals fossielen en modellen. De voorwerpen die in het museum worden bewaard, omvatten tienduizend monsters en een bibliotheek met duizenden boeken en documenten.
Located just 6 miles away from downtown, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has been created and imitated the natural habitat of giant pandas in order that they might have the best possible environment for rearing and breeding.
The giant pandas are not only a Chinese national treasure but are also beloved by people the world over. They are found only in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. In total there are fewer than 2,000, of which 70% are distributed within the territory of Sichuan Province. Therefore, when visitors from home and abroad come to Chengdu, Sichuan, one of their main objectives will be to see this lovely animal for themselves.
The base cares also for other rare and endangered wild animals with an area of 560 mus (92 acres), 96% of which is verdure. Giant pandas, lesser pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks as well as over 20 species of rare animals are fed and bred there. Verdant bamboo, bright flowers, fresh air, a natural hill scene and a beautiful artificial view are merged ingeniously at the base.
The necessary facilities have been completed and include a fodder room, sleeping quarters and a medical station. Additionally there is a museum together with research laboratories and a training center.
A great number of plants and as many as ten thousand clumps of bamboos and bushes have been cultivated to provide for the animals’ diet and habitat. The base is planned to be expanded by another 3,000 mus (500 acres) of land on which to simulate a natural environment in order to prepare the giant pandas bred for release into the wild.
