De Kathedraal van de Hemelvaart van Maria is de grootste kathedraal in Amerika en de zetel van het rooms-katholieke aartsbisdom van Mexico. Het ligt boven op de voormalige Azteekse heilige wijk in de buurt van de Templo Mayor aan de noordelijke kant van de Plaza de la Constitución. De kathedraal werd gebouwd tussen 1573 en 1813 rond de oorspronkelijke kerk, die al snel werd gebouwd na de Spaanse verovering van Tenochtitlan en deze uiteindelijk volledig verving. De Spaanse architect Claudio de Arciniega plande de bouw, geïnspireerd op de gotische kathedralen in Spanje.
The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary of Mexico City is the largest cathedral in the Americas and seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico. It is situated atop the former Aztec sacred precinct near the Templo Mayor on the northern side of the Plaza de la Constitución. The cathedral was built in sections from 1573 to 1813 around the original church that was constructed soon after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan, eventually replacing it entirely. Spanish architect Claudio de Arciniega planned the construction, drawing inspiration from Gothic cathedrals in Spain.
