Floreana is vernoemd naar Juan José Flores, de eerste president van Ecuador, tijdens wiens regering Ecuador bezit nam van de Galapagos-archipel. Eerder heette het Charles Island (naar Koning Charles II van Engeland) en Santa Maria, naar een van de schepen van Columbus. Het eiland heeft een oppervlakte van 173 km² en werd gevormd door een vulkanische uitbarsting.
Floreana Island was named after Juan José Flores, the first president of Ecuador, during whose administration the government of Ecuador took possession of the Galapagos archipelago. It was previously called Charles Island (after King Charles II of England), and Santa Maria after one of the caravels of Columbus. The island has an area of 67 sq miles and was formed by volcanic eruption.
