De Matthiaskerk werd, volgens de kerkelijke traditie, oorspronkelijk gebouwd in Romaanse stijl in 1015 hoewel er geen archeologische resten van bestaan. Het huidige gebouw werd opgetrokken in gotische stijl in de tweede helft van de 14de eeuw en werd uitgebreid gerestaureerd in de late 19e eeuw. Het was de tweede grootste kerk van middeleeuwse Buda en de op zes na grootste kerk van het middeleeuwse Hongaarse Koninkrijk.
Matthias Church was, according to church tradition, originally built in Romanesque style in 1015, although no archaeological remains exist. The current building was constructed in Gothic style in the second half of the 14th century and was extensively restored in the late 19th century. It was the second largest church of medieval Buda and the seventh largest church of medieval Hungarian Kingdom.
