Het Baptisterium (Battistero di San Giovanni), ook bekend als de doopkapel van Sint-Jan, is een van de oudste gebouwen in de stad, gebouwd tussen 1059 en 1128. De doopkapel staat bekend om zijn drie sets van bronzen deuren met reliëfsculpturen. De zuiderdeuren werden gemaakt door Andrea Pisano en het noorder- en oosterdeuren door Lorenzo Ghiberti. Deze laatste werden door Michelangelo de Poorten van het Paradijs genoemd. De Italiaanse dichter Dante en vele andere opmerkelijke personen uit de Renaissance, met inbegrip van leden van de familie Medici, werden gedoopt in deze kapel.
The Florence Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni), also known as the Baptistry of Saint John, is one of the oldest buildings in the city, constructed between 1059 and 1128. The Baptistry is renowned for its three sets of bronze doors with relief sculptures. The south doors were done by Andrea Pisano and the north and east doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti. The east doors were dubbed by Michelangelo the Gates of Paradise. The Italian poet Dante and many other notable Renaissance figures, including members of the Medici family, were baptized in this baptistry.
