De baai bestaat uit een grote verzameling van monolitische, kalkstenen eilanden, die, elk bedekt met dichte junglevegetatie, spectaculair uit de oceaan opstijgen. Verschillende van de eilanden zijn hol met enorme grotten. Sung Sot ( Grot van de houten palen) is de grootste grot in de Ha Long gebied. Franse toeristen bezochten het in de late 19e eeuw en gaven het de naam Grotte des Merveilles (Grot der wonderen/verrassingen). De drie grote kamers bevatten talrijke grote stalactieten en stalagmieten (evenals 19e eeuwse Franse graffiti).
The bay consists of a dense cluster of limestone monolithic islands each topped with thick jungle vegetation, rising spectacularly from the ocean. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves. Sung Sot (Wooden stakes cave) is the largest grotto in the Ha Long area. French tourists visited in the late 19th century, and named the cave Grotte des Merveilles (Surprise Cave). Its three large chambers contain large numerous stalactites and stalagmites (as well as 19th century French graffiti).
