De Su Taung Pyi-pagode, op de top van Mandalay Hill, werd gebouwd door koning Anawratha in de 11e eeuw en werd gerenoveerd door de opeenvolgende koningen. Toen Boeddha nog in leven was, op een van zijn bezoeken aan Myanmar, beklom hij samen met zijn discipel Ananda de heuvel en voorspelde dat op deze plaats een grote stad zou worden opgericht. Die stad staat nu bekend als Mandalay.
Su Taung Pyi Pagoda, on top of Mandalay Hill, was built by King Anawratha in the 11th century. It was renovated by successive kings. During the time when Buddha was alive, while on one of his visits to Myanmar, the Buddha with his disciple Ananda climbed the hill and prophesied that a great city would be founded below the and also pointed the place of that future city. That city is now known as Mandalay.
